USF Math and Technology Pathway

If you just can’t get enough of exciting developments in the tech industry and need to know everything about app development, data security, artificial intelligence (AI) and more, you may be a perfect fit for the University of South Florida’s Math and Technology Exploratory Pathway.

Deciding on a major can be a tough call. Let us help you find your path.

Your interest in technology or math is fantastic, but there are so many choices under this umbrella. Picking your path isn’t easy, so we offer an exploratory program for incoming freshmen. Take up to 36 credit hours through USF’s Exploratory Curriculum program before making a final decision on your major. Those 36 hours ALSO include any hours you’ve earned through AP, IB, AICE, dual enrollment, etc.

Please note that this is not a program from which you can graduate, but the credit hours you complete will count toward your degree. Through this pathway, you’ll explore math and technology subjects like:

  • Data analytics
  • Information security
  • Applied mathematics
  • Business intelligence

Once you’ve engaged with courses that give you a first-hand look at the many options available to you, you’ll be in a prime position to make this meaningful decision.

What will you study in your Exploratory Pathway at USF?

During your first semester, you’ll take a course called U-Decide, a cornerstone of USF’s Exploratory Curriculum. This course helps you learn valuable skills and determine what you’re most passionate about in the field of math or technology, or any other major you choose. Learn to:

  • Think critically about complex problems, both in the classroom and in the real world.
  • Find creative solutions to challenging problems, working collaboratively with others to brainstorm and implement ideas.
  • Communicate your ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.

Connect with other students who share your interest in math and technology, meet with USF professors and get personalized support from academic advisors.

How Will U-Decide Help You?

Become equipped and empowered to steer your future and learn to adapt to today’s changing economic and career landscape.

This program is flexible, so if you decide a math major or technology degree isn’t for you, it’s easy to switch to a different option. The subjects you’ll explore during this pathway can include:

  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Information Literacy
  • Introduction to Ethics

Your advisor will work with you throughout the process to determine what may be the best fit for you. Students who take this pathway often go on to major in subjects such as:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Information Sciences
  • Aerospace Studies Minor
  • Astronomy Minor
  • Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Management
  • Criminology with Cybercrime Concentration
  • Medical Technology
